setting is a Melbourne suburb, father is
a drunken bully, mother is a successful
nurse. The elder boy, "My brother Jack',
is a tough larrikin, fighting, drinking,
swearing and wenching. His young brother Davey, the narrator, is something of a
prig and milksop.
